"Blackford's Beauty" Quilt Block

by Judy Tucker

I found this block in “The Quilting Book” which I reviewed in my last post. I love the star in a star and the potential for a chain in adjacent blocks.

My intention was to make a bed quilt with 36 blocks. The book as a deconstructed block, but not pattern so I redrew it in the quilt program, Electric Quilt 8. I printed out a diagram of the full quilt, though not in the colors I intended to sew.

My young Labrador ate the printed diagram! She was definitely on the right track destroying it! While the blocks I’m making are big at 16 inches, each on them takes me a good part of an afternoon to piece. So, I’m following her cue, and will probably make some sort of more modern alternate grid with some empty “negative space” blocks. More interesting I think, and less work!

I’m using a blue background with non-directional “tossed” geese and paired solids from Tula Pink.

There are only 11 pairs. I purchased 1/2 yard cuts, and could have squeezed out 3 blocks from each pair, but I think I’ll stick with just 2 blocks with each color set.

This is still very much a work in progress. And it’s progressing rather slowly. Time will tell what the final quilt looks like, and how big it ends up.
Fortunately I still love the block.
